Washington, DC, is organized into eight wards. Each ward is further divided into Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. These are roughly equivalent to commonly understood boundaries defining most major neighborhoods. DC Code requires that about every 2,000 residents are grouped into a Single Member District (SMD) that is represented by an individual Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner. ​​​
